Duncan Wylie: Artist & Co-Author
Duncan Wylie is a contemporary artist born in Harare, Zimbabwe (1975), and works between London and Paris. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in Paris, Wylie’s visual art has been exhibited internationally, including at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zeitz MOCAA, and the Musée de Grenoble. His work is held in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, MUDAM (Luxembourg), and the CNAP.
Between 1998 and 2015, Wylie devoted 17 years to traveling back to Zimbabwe to photograph and document the vanishing traces of its historical culture, a heritage deeply rooted in his childhood.
Zimbabwe is the Shona name for the famous stone ruins, Great Zimbabwe: The name contains dzimba, the Shona term for "houses". Zimbabwe is derived from Dzimba-dza-mabwe, translated from the Karanga dialect of Shona as "large houses of stone" (dzimba = plural of imba, "house"; mabwe = plural of bwe, "stone").
